Thursday Night Lights

by Domenica Russum
This year at Valley Stream South High School, instead of the traditional Friday Night Lights game, the football team faced off against Island Trees High School for Thursday Night Lights on Sept. 10. South’s varsity football team prevailed against the competition, while varsity cheerleaders kept the student section energized. Although students had to wake up early the next morning for school, the student body still showed up in huge numbers to support the Falcons.
The theme for the Thursday night game was neon. Students arrived in bright shirts and face paint, while cheerleaders showed their support wearing neon socks and necklaces. While the cheerleaders kept the crowd enthusiastic, the close 15-14 final score—with the Falcons triumphing over the Island Trees Bulldogs—kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
The night game is one of the most popular sports events of the year because there is traditionally only one per season. This leaves just one opportunity for students to watch the team play at home under the lights, driving the massive crowd. In fact, the night game rivals events like the pep rally in popularity. Because it usually takes place before homecoming, it offers a prime opportunity for the student body to connect while building school spirit. Overall, the turnout proved that South’s Falcons will never pass up a chance to show their pride.
