Summer jobs are essential for developing skills that will benefit teens throughout their lives. Research shows that teens who have summer jobs often develop qualities such as financial independence, communication and teamwork skills, and increased problem-solving abilities. According to South High School junior Isabella Murphy, the jobs that she had over the summer required her to open bank accounts and learn how to understand financial information; furthermore, the jobs she held over the summers taught her communication skills when working with co-workers and communicating with her employers. South High School junior Lauren Frasher had a similar experience as she reflected on her summer work experience, stating that she felt a certain amount of independence when working, as she had to learn how to solve problems on her own, resulting in a sense of responsibility. Summer jobs not only build skills, but they also help teenagers explore future career options. For example, if a teen is considering working with children as a possible career path, getting a job at a summer camp can bring clarity regarding whether they enjoy working with kids. Summer jobs can also help teenagers begin to build their resumes. Not only does getting a summer job build work experience, but summer jobs can also boost a college application by demonstrating responsibility and leadership qualities. Overall, summer jobs are beneficial to teens as they help them feel more confident about learning and developing skills necessary for the job market, as well as helping teens develop financial literacy and problem-solving skills.
